World Languages Department

Assabet Valley recognizes the importance of offering world languages to its students. Spanish and Portuguese are languages currently offered at Assabet in anticipation of future world language requirements specified by the state for high school graduation. Students who are interested in entering a four-year college will also have achieved the foundation required by many colleges.

The ability to communicate with others is of vital importance in the world today. As international business and travel expand, they bring an increased need and opportunity to interact with people from other cultures.

Not only must students develop an ability to communicate with people in Spanish and Portuguese languages, but also they must develop an understanding and appreciation of the variety of cultures in Spanish and Portuguese speaking countries to compete in a global society. By teaching world languages, we prepare our students to become productive citizens of our democratic society and of the world.

Hispanic Heritage Month:

In Ms. Picucci’s Spanish classes, students have recently learned about Hispanic Heritage month; which is celebrated annually from September 15 - October 15. The celebration is centered around the Independence Days of Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua; which are all celebrated on September 15.  It also includes Mexico’s Independence Day (September 16), Chile’s Independence Day (September 18), and "El Día de la Raza", which is the Hispanic equivalent of Columbus Day (October 12).

Ms. Picucci’s students made creative informational collages or designed PowerPoint presentations about a famous Hispanic of their choice. They also dressed up and assumed the role of their famous Hispanic in class. Some of the students' many choices included: Sonia Sotomayor, Ellen Ochoa, Paul Rodriguez Jr., Christina Aguilera, Jaslene Gonzalez, Roger Calero, Carlos Santana, Eva Longoria, Enrique Iglesias, George Lopez, Antonia Novello, Rita Moreno, Angel Cabrera, David Ortiz, Oscar Gutierrez, Frida Kahlo, América Ferrera, Cameron Diaz, and Evita Perón.

The students really enjoyed creating these projects and watching their role-play was very entertaining! They gained a wealth of knowledge about the significant contributions Hispanics have made to our society.
