I want to share some exciting news about a new pilot program approved by the school committee titled “Learning without Walls.”  We will start implementing after the February vacation to address the issue of adding extra days to the school year when school is closed due to weather or other conditions. This is an effort to continue learning for students on days when opening school is impossible or impractical due to weather concerns or events beyond our control. You may have heard of other school districts using a similar program called “Blizzard Bags.”

If we are forced to close school due to inclement weather or other conditions, we have the option of assigning school work to be completed at home to be turned in after 10 school days of the closure. This would be announced with the cancellation. These assignments are designed specific to a course of study and based on the needs of the student.

The assignments for students are mandatory and count for attendance on the school day cancelled. We understand that completing assignments during storms may pose a challenge for some families, especially when electrical power is out. The due date for assignments will be 10 school days after the first day back to school.

School assignments will be provided to students by hardcopy as well as being posted on the school website under the Students & Parents tab. Students will complete the assignments relative to the schedule for that day (academic or vocational).

Academic and technical teachers will be available on the cancelled school day by email to assist the students between 9:00 am – 1:00 pm. 

Students may also attend extra help sessions following the cancellation to obtain assistance.

The benefit is that these days will count as official school days. These days will not need to be made-up in June. State regulations require students attend a minimum of 180 days and the school year must end by June 30th.
